Class is in session at Bublr Bikes! We’re doing a series of hands-on programs to teach young adults about bike mechanics and bike share.
Bublr’s course is taught by Bublr system tech and mechanic wizard Chris LoCicero with help from Lawrence Hoffman, program coordinator of BGC B!KE at Boys & Girls Clubs. The students come to us to learn about the unique features of Bublr Bikes like drum brakes, generator lights and internal hubs. Students who successfully complete the course can earn a Bike Share Mechanics certificate. We believe this to be the first such bike share mechanics certificate program in the country.
“I like learning a trade,” said Armando, who was selected as a Bublr intern. “I’ve never touched bikes like this before and enjoy working on bikes that are different.”
Kadeam, also selected as a Bublr intern, said he was interested in how bike share interacts with the community and the first class gave him a look at Bublr’s network size, the diverse ridership, and trip numbers by day.
“I liked learning about how Bublr works and the purpose of the system,” Kadeam said.
Before stepping through the door at Bublr, students like Armando and Kadeam will have already completed 16 weeks of bike mechanics training at the Boys & Girls Clubs and DreamBikes programs!
Lawrence was proud of how far the students have come since they started learning under his guidance at Boys & Girls Clubs.
“Bublr offers permanent job opportunities,” Lawrence said. “In my mind, the most important part is that we have something worthwhile on the other side [of training].”
Whether the students who attend the Bublr course become interns or decide to pursue another career path, the whole program — from Boys & Girls Clubs to DreamBikes to Bublr Bikes — helps them build a professional network in Milwaukee. The Bike Share Mechanics Certificate allows these students to better market their capabilities to bike shops and any of the over 100 North American bike share systems.
We wish all of the students the best of luck. We’re starting the class cycle again and are excited to meet our next group of students!
